File Formats and Compatibility

What format are Aeroplan Music Store songs and albums in? (Back to Top)
The Aeroplan Music Store offers music in two files formats: WMA (WMA Windows Media Audio) and MP3 (MPEG Audio Layer-3). Each song or album that you are able to download will show either a WMA or MP3 graphic next to it for easy identification.

What’s the difference between WMA and MP3 files? (Back to Top)

WMA files contain Digital Rights Management (DRM). DRM allows content owners to determine how music files can be used and prevents illegal file sharing. In order to play or burn a DRM encrypted music file, you must have the proper license, Windows Media Player and a PC. WMA files will not work on a Mac. Every WMA song downloaded from Aeroplan comes with the required license. The license delivery process is invisible to the user and will automatically be downloaded to your computer during the download process.

MP3 files can be played on any computer, software program or portable device that supports MP3 files. There are no licensing restrictions for playing, burning or sharing. However, only a small percentage of our music catalog is available in MP3. The sound quality for either format is identical.

How do I play my music files? (Back to Top)
In order to play your music, it is recommended that you use the latest version of Windows Media Player. Because most Aeroplan music files are Windows Media format, Windows Media Player will properly play the files, access licenses, and allow you to burn and transfer to portable devices.

What kind of MP3 Players can I play my music on? (Back to Top)
Windows Media files are copyright protected, meaning that artists and record companies can ensure payment for their hard work. Windows Media files are the most widely used media online, and you can play them in over 75 different portable digital players, such as Creative, Dell, iRiver, Palm, Rio, Gateway, Samsung, Toshiba, and Audiovox.

MP3 files can be played on any portable digital player, including iPod.
